We celebrated a family birthday Sunday and I used a food resource that I have shopped a number of times but never blogged about. Mi Pueblo Food Center in San Rafael has taken the Hispanic/Latino market to a level of excellence not matched by any I visited here or in Mexico. The place is clean, bright and well displayed. The produce is beautiful. There is a full service bakery, meat - fish counter and a deli. In addition there is a grill where you can purchase prepared hot foods to eat on premise or takeout (loved the carnitas!) The staff are bi-lingual so I don't have to embarrass myself with my horrible Spanish. My favorite thing of all is the prices. Good food cheap always brings me to the door. Even local items like Clover Dairy Products are priced lower than most other markets in the area. Enough said.

On this visit we purchased a number of different salsas from the deli. From the meat counter some meat for carne asada; tortillas and Corona beer landed in the cart. The hot grill provided carnitas. We went home and put on a pot of beans and by dinner time the feast was ready. Everything was set on the table and each person got to choose their own fillings. Tacos the way you like!
Tacos my way!

What a great way to feed the family, free the cooks for the celebration, and save a little moolah in the meantime. Win-win-win! Next time I venture over to Marin, I'll give it a try. Better yet, I'll Google to see if perhaps they have one over here!
Zoomie- They are a chain so click on the link for list of stores. San Rafael probably is closest to you. Second exit off the bridge.
I did check them out and San Rafael is actually closer than their Oakland store. I'll be over one day soon! Maybe we can meet for lunch, you, me, Buzz and April?
Zoomie- We should do that. I have been such a grumpy hermit lately.
I think these new mega-mexican stores are great. One stop shop for fresh and cheap stuff. Las Montana is our version of Mi Pueblo. In fact Zoomie is closer than I to this store.
Chilebrown- You people in the east bay are lucky to have so many choices of ethnic markets. For example Ranch 99. Here in Marin most cater to "upscale" not us guys with beer budgets.
