Almost six years ago I wrote a blog about New England Style Hot Dog Buns. I reminisced about time spent in Hartford, Connecticut and ordered the buns from back east. That post continues to get many hits daily and has racked up 79 comments to date.I have seen the photo I took used in a number of places without permission, but what the heck it's a hit on the blogoshpere. The buns are still available by mail but my wife Avril, the baker, decided to order the special pan for making them from Amazon. She played with several recipes and finally decided on a recipe from Food.com. There are so many variables in baking that boggle my mind. I leave it to her to make the buns. The final product is firmer with a better bite that stands up to wet- sloppy fillings. The original buns are like Wonder Bread, these are more of what I would call an artisan roll.
Making New England Hot Dog Buns
When Avril has a baking day she makes a couple of dozen and we cut them and freeze for later use.The cost of the buns is a fraction of what they cost when ordered from back east.
