Nate Berkus - How's that for Thrifty?

Back in my college days I worked at a restaurant that sold hamburgers and hot dogs cooked over charcoal. It sold a double quarter pound with cheese long before McDonalds added one to its menu. The big specialty was the double third pound patty with two slices of cheese and slices of grilled pineapple on a sourdough hamburger roll. My arteries clog as I type these descriptions. One day two flirty coeds came in and convinced the owner that a salad would be a great addition. The owner came up with an iceberg lettuce salad topped with canned beets, garbanzos and kidney beans. You had the choice of thousand island, blue cheese or French dressings. If you were really special you could ask for the cruets of oil and vinegar to dress your own salad.

How does all that history relate to today? I have become addicted to watching the Nate Berkus Show. I pay closest attention to the segments on thrift store shopping. I found a wood salad bowl with fork, spoon and four serving bowls and a three compartment condiment dish all for under $10! I am a thrifty guy! I drew on my past life experience to bring back a good old fashion salad bar for our latest dinner party. How retro seventies can I be? Just one thing.....stay out of my thrift store!

The salad bowl is fantastic! Is your secret store in Novato? I've shopped there. I got a bowl and a condiment dish, too!

cookiecrumb -Yes in Novato. I had been looking at wood salad bowls and suffered sticker shock. When I saw the set for $6.99 I leaped on it.

No fair keeping secrets! Let us in on it, please. And I like the salad bar idea - lets people decide for themselves what to add to their salads. I do similar for desserts - ice cream sundaes with several flavors, nuts, sprinkles, whipped cream, etc., and everyone gets to scoop her/his own. Adds fun.

Zoomie- Goodwill in Novato but please don't tell ;). I was inspired by The Nate show. He had a blogger on called Mr Goodwill Hunting.Turns out just like food bloggers there are tons of thrift shopping bloggers.
