New England Style Hot Dog Buns Homemade

Almost six years ago I wrote a blog about New England Style Hot Dog Buns. I reminisced about time spent in Hartford, Connecticut and ordered the buns from back east. That post continues to get many hits daily and has racked up 79 comments to date.I have seen the photo I took used in a number of places without permission, but what the heck it's a hit on the blogoshpere.   The buns are still available by mail but my wife Avril, the baker, decided to order the special pan for making them from Amazon. She played with several recipes and finally decided on a recipe from Food.com. There are so many variables in baking that boggle my mind. I leave it to her to make the buns. The final product is firmer with a better bite that stands up to wet- sloppy fillings. The original buns are like Wonder Bread, these are more of what I would call an artisan roll.

Making New England Hot Dog Buns
When Avril has a baking day she makes a couple of dozen and we cut them and freeze for later use.The cost of the buns is a fraction of what they cost when ordered from back east.

Greg, if there are duplicate comments please remove.

Those rolls look delish. I am going to make some but skip buying the fancy pan.

Chilebrown- You could do it without the pan for sure. I think I lack the patience to be a great baker.

Cranky wants to know, "where's the lobster?"
Beautiful job, April.

cookiecrumb- Yes we have no lobsters today. You like shrimps?

The buns look yummy; but, look at the nutritional content on the side. Calories per serving: 2,787; cholesterol per serving: 697.2; Sodium per serving: 2,621. Better be real young, and have a really healthy heart!

Anonymous- Do you really think there is that many calories in one roll? Even with the dog and condiments I don't think you could hit that mark. Something tells me that might not be a correct equation. Most all of the calorie counters I see say the whole rig might be 500. Enjoy life!

Greg, that's what the site, (Food.com), where you got this recipe, says; look it up again! I also thought the numbers looked quite high, but that is what it says and someone should question them on this. Love your pictures. Oh, by the way I have enjoyed life, hitting 70 and counting and I have been eating hot dogs and buns all my life.
